Arabuko-Sokoke Forest in Kenya's Coastal Region

The Arabuko-Sokoke Forest is East Africa's largest surviving, dry coastal forest, situated only 7 km inland from Watamu and 18 km southwest from Malindi on the Kenya Coast.
A small population of elephant, buffalo and six species of small antelope, including the globally endangered Ader's Duiker, can be found in the Forest. Mongoose, bush babies and genet cat can sometimes be seen at night, while the caracal and the endangered golden-rumped elephant shrew are often visible during the day. Baboons and Sykes monkeys are often spotted.
One third of Kenya's 870 butterfly species are abundant in the Forest, especially during the rainy season (May-July).
Considered the second most important African forest for its bird conservation value, over 260 species of bird have been recorded in Arabuko-Sokoke Forest.

3 Days Arabuko-Sokoke and Mid Creek.

Day 1: ARABUKO-SOKOKE FOREST

After breakfast You will be picked from your hotel the African Safari Club where you have a package the depart for Arabuko Sokoke forest for bird watching . Covering 420 km², it is considered amongst the most important forests in Africa for its bird conservation value. Over 260 species of birds have been recorded in the forest, which numerically is not much but it includes six globally threatened species: Sokoke Scops Owl, Sokoke Pipit, East Coast Akalat, Amani Sunbird and Clarke's Weaver which is only found here. There is also one globally endangered species: the Spotted Ground Thrush.

You will look for the above species and certainly not ignore other exciting finds such as the Fischer’s Turaco, Southern Banded Snake Eagle, Plain-backed Sunbird, Eastern Bearded Scrub Robin, Green Barbet, Ashy Flycatcher and the Black-headed Apalis among others. The seasonal pools in the forest attract a range of water birds including Little Grebe, White-faced Whistling and White-backed Duck and the African Jacana.

While here we’ll update our mammal list by including such rarities like the Ader’s Duiker, Sokoke Bushy-tailed Mongoose and the Golden-rumped Elephant-shrew. O/N at African Safari Club.

Day 2: MIDA CREEK

After breakfast depart for Mida Creek. This is an enclosed creek open to the sea through a narrow mouth and surrounded by mangrove forest. It has shallow waters and at low tides vast areas of muddy sand flats are exposed. It is a major resting and wintering site for migrant waders. Crab Plovers are the main attraction but other birds of great interest are Great and Mongolian Sandplovers, Terek and Curlew Sandpipers, Grey Plovers, Greater Flamingoes and Yellow-billed Storks. Attracted by fish that is left behind by the tide, the African Fish Eagle is a resident in the Mida Creek and it shares the fishing with the migrant Ospreys.
